“Our Pride” — five martyrs of the Language Movement

Moder Gorob Sculpture

Bronze figures of the 1952 martyrs standing before Bangla Academy.

Positioned in front of the Bangla Academy in Dhaka, Moder Gorob (Our Pride) commemorates the five principal martyrs of the 1952 Language Movement: Abdus Salam, Rafiq Uddin Ahmed, Abdul Jabbar, Shafiur Rahman, and Abul Barkat. Sculpted by Mofidul Alam Khan and unveiled on 1 February 2007 during the Ekushey Book Fair, the work presents the five figures on a raised base backed by a wall bearing frescoes of the movement. Funded in part by a corporate donation and Bangla Academy resources, the sculpture reinforces the Academy’s role as a guardian of Bengali language and culture.
