Aparajeyo Bangla Monument

“Unvanquished Bengal” — three figures of the people’s war

Aparajeyo Bangla Monument

A farmer, a student, and a nurse standing together before the Faculty of Arts.

Located on the University of Dhaka campus in front of the Faculty of Arts Building, Aparajeyo Bangla was designed by sculptor Syed Abdullah Khalid. Work began in 1973 under the auspices of the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union and was completed and inaugurated on 16 December 1979 by wounded freedom fighters. The sculpture presents three dynamic figures: a rural youth with rifle and grenade at the centre, an urban student with a rifle, and a young woman carrying a first-aid kit. Together they embody the broad participation of ordinary Bengalis in the Liberation War. The work has become one of the most widely recognised visual symbols of 1971.
