Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban
Louis I. Kahn's monumental work of modern architecture
Concrete and Light. The Monumental Geometry of Bangladesh's Parliament.
Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, the National Parliament House of Bangladesh, stands among Dhaka's most internationally recognized works of architecture. American architect Louis I. Kahn designed the complex around monumental geometry, exposed concrete, natural light, water, and carefully controlled circulation.
Authorities formally commissioned Kahn in 1962 as part of the development of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar. Construction continued through the political transformation of the region, paused during the 1971 Liberation War, and resumed after independence. Bangladesh completed and inaugurated the Parliament complex in 1982.
The main building draws much of its power from its scale and apparent simplicity. Large circles, rectangles, triangles, and segmented arches cut into the outer concrete walls. These openings create deep shadow while allowing daylight and air into the building. Thin marble bands break up the concrete surfaces and emphasize the geometry.
Kahn placed the Assembly Chamber at the center of a concentric plan. The chamber has 354 seats, while the current Parliament constitutionally consists of 350 members, including 300 directly elected seats and 50 reserved seats for women.
Water plays an essential part in the composition. An artificial lake touches the main building on several sides and helps create the impression that the heavy concrete structure rises from the water. This water body should not be confused with Crescent Lake, which lies farther north near Chandrima Udyan.
Current Parliament material describes the wider complex as approximately 215 acres, including the Parliament House, lawns, water, and related facilities.
The building is best understood slowly. From Manik Mia Avenue, visitors can study the changing shadows and massive geometric openings without entering the secured complex. Interior access operates under Parliament Secretariat rules and requires advance application and security screening.
