Chandpur–Belgaon Tea Estate

An unexpected sweep of tea rises inland from southern Chattogram’s coast.

Chandpur–Belgaon Tea Estate

Leave the main road behind and enter the tea country of Banshkhali—with permission, curiosity and time to explore.

The Chandpur–Belgaon tea landscape in Banshkhali is a surprising inland counterpoint to southern Chattogram’s coastal identity. Green cultivated hills replace the expected sea horizon, revealing how tea production extends beyond greater Sylhet. The estate is far from Chattogram’s central hotel zone, so transport, daylight and permission should be planned as one journey. The estate unfolds across thousands of acres of rolling hillocks that rise gently above the surrounding rural villages. Unlike gardens set against deep forest reserves, the terrain here features wide, open vistas where sunlight pours across the neatly trimmed bushes from early morning until dusk. The soil carries a distinct mineral richness that supports the cultivation of high-quality clone tea, widely celebrated across the country for its bright liquor and refreshing taste.

Careful irrigation systems and well-maintained pathways weave through the green slopes, ensuring that fresh shoots continue to sprout vigorously even during dry weather. Walking through the grounds feels peaceful and structured, with the orderly patterns of the plants creating a soothing visual rhythm that stretches out toward the horizon. Human dedication remains the true heartbeat behind this southern agricultural hub. Every day at sunrise, hundreds of local workers step into the hills with large woven baskets resting on their shoulders. Many of these laborers bring years of shared family experience to the fields, knowing intuitively which young leaves and unopened buds will yield the finest brew. Their gentle, practiced hands move swiftly among the branches, harvesting tender leaves that are quickly gathered and transported to modern processing facilities.

This daily routine creates a strong sense of community and shared purpose, supporting hundreds of families who proudly maintain the only major tea cultivation enterprise in the southern coastal region. Beyond its impressive agricultural yield, the garden has slowly transformed into a cherished escape for nature lovers and weekend explorers along the Chattogram coastline. The calm atmosphere provides a wonderful contrast to the crashing waves of nearby Banshkhali beach, allowing visitors to experience two completely different natural wonders within a single day's journey.

Plan Your Trip

  • When to Visit: November–February offers the coolest, driest walking weather. March–May and post-monsoon periods can show more active plucking, while June–October is intensely green but rain, mud and leeches may affect access.
  • How to Visit: Reach Chattogram by flight, train or coach, then make the longer road journey south to Banshkhali in a reserved vehicle. Leave early, confirm the gate and return before dark unless a verified local stay is booked.
  • Where to Stay: For full-service standards, Radisson Blu Chattogram Bay View is a 5-star option, The Peninsula Chittagong a 4-star option, and Foy’s Lake Resort a 3-star option. These are city bases, not near every garden; where the road transfer is long, use a verified local guesthouse in the relevant upazila. For a closer landscape experience, use a verified tea-area resort or locally registered guesthouse; estate bungalows and worker-community accommodation are not public unless the operator and host have explicitly confirmed the booking.
