Sirajganj River Port
A historic trading hub on the mighty Jamuna
Gateway to the North. The Enduring Legacy of the Jamuna.
Located on the western bank of the Jamuna River, Sirajganj has long functioned as a critical gateway between the northern districts and the rest of Bangladesh. Historically, it was a thriving river port, playing a major role in the colonial-era jute trade and facilitating the movement of agricultural goods across the region.
The Jamuna is one of the widest and most powerful braided rivers in the world. To protect the historic town from the river's aggressive erosion, massive engineering projects have been implemented, most notably the Sirajganj Hard Point and the Crossbar Dam. These structures have inadvertently created some of the most scenic riverfront promenades in the country.
Visitors gather at the Hard Point to witness the sheer scale of the Jamuna. From the banks, the iconic Bangabandhu Bridge—one of the longest bridges in South Asia—can be seen spanning the massive waterway. Small passenger boats and traditional cargo vessels continuously navigate the strong currents, maintaining the town’s maritime heritage.
Sirajganj offers a powerful visual representation of the constant battle and coexistence between human engineering and the immense natural force of the delta's rivers.
