Munshiganj Boat Culture
The historic boat-building heritage of the delta
Crafted for the Current. The Master Boat Builders of Bikrampur.
Munshiganj, historically known as Bikrampur, holds a prestigious place in the maritime and cultural history of Bangladesh. Surrounded by the Padma, Meghna, and Dhaleshwari rivers, the region’s geography demanded a mastery of boat building, a tradition that continues to thrive today.
Local artisans specialize in constructing traditional wooden boats. From small dinghis used for household transport to large kosha boats used for cargo and racing, the craftsmanship requires exceptional skill. Builders do not use formal blueprints; instead, they rely on indigenous knowledge passed down through generations. They expertly select, shape, and join wood using traditional techniques to ensure the vessels are balanced, durable, and suited to the delta's specific water conditions.
The demand for these boats surges right before the monsoon when rising waters turn isolated villages into temporary islands. During this time, seasonal boat markets emerge, where newly crafted wooden boats are lined up along the canals for sale.
Munshiganj’s boat culture is a testament to human adaptation. The artisan carpenters of this region do not merely build transport; they build the essential tools required to survive and thrive in a river-dominated landscape.
