Swadhinata Stambha

A tower of light on the ground of surrender

Swadhinata Stambha

Fifty metres of stacked glass marking the place where the Pakistani forces surrendered.

Located in Suhrawardy Udyan (formerly Ramna Race Course), the Swadhinata Stambha commemorates two defining events of 1971: Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s historic 7 March address and the formal surrender of Pakistani forces on 16 December. Designed by architects Kashef Mahboob Chowdhury and Marina Tabassum, the monument centres on a 50-metre tower of stacked glass panels that becomes a luminous pillar after dark. The broader complex includes an underground museum, reflecting pools, an eternal flame, and landscaped grounds. Construction began in the late 1990s and was substantially completed in the early 2010s.
