Martyred Intellectuals Memorial

Martyred Intellectuals Memorial

Where the nation’s brightest minds were murdered in the last days of the Liberation War.

On the night of 14 December 1971, Pakistani forces and local collaborators systematically abducted and executed hundreds of Bengali intellectuals—professors, doctors, journalists, writers, and artists—at brickfields in Rayer Bazar. The Martyred Intellectuals Memorial, designed by architects Farid Uddin Ahmed and Md Jami-al-Shafi and completed in 1999, stands on this site. Its principal element is a long, curved brick wall approximately 18 m high and 116 m in length, deliberately broken at both ends to express rupture and grief. A square opening frames the sky, while a black granite column and still water body complete the composition of mourning and remembrance. 14 December is observed nationally as Martyred Intellectuals Day.
