Shapla Square Monument

The national flower at the heart of Motijheel

Shapla Square Monument

A stone water lily rising from a roundabout that also marks a mass grave of 1971.

Shapla Square (Shapla Chattar) occupies a prominent roundabout in Motijheel, Dhaka’s central business district, adjacent to the Bangladesh Bank. At its centre stands a large sculptural representation of the shapla (water lily), Bangladesh’s national flower, set within a circular fountain. The site also overlays a mass grave from the 1971 Liberation War, giving the commercial landmark an underlying layer of historical gravity. The square has long served as a focal point of urban life and, at times, of political assembly in the capital’s financial core.
