Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban
Louis Kahn’s monumental parliament, a modernist icon of democracy
One of the twentieth century’s great legislative complexes, rising from the lakes of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar.
Designed by the American architect Louis I. Kahn (with local collaboration from Muzharul Islam), the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban is Bangladesh’s National Parliament House. Originally conceived in the early 1960s as a second capital complex for Pakistan, construction began in 1964 and was completed in 1982 after independence. The vast complex occupies roughly 210 acres and centres on a massive concrete structure of geometric forms, courtyards, and light wells that respond to the tropical climate while drawing on Bengali and Mughal spatial traditions. Kahn’s design emphasises monumentality, natural light, and the relationship between solid and void; the assembly hall seats 350 members. The building received the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 1989 and remains one of the most significant works of twentieth-century architecture in South Asia.
