Sadarghat River Port & Buriganga Boat Rides

Dhaka's historic river gateway in a changing transport era.

Sadarghat River Port & Buriganga Boat Rides

River City. Meet Dhaka at the Edge of the Buriganga.

Dhaka grew beside the Buriganga, and Sadarghat remains one of the clearest places to understand that riverine history. Boats, cargo, markets, warehouses, old buildings, and passenger vessels have shaped this waterfront for generations.

Sadarghat developed as an important landing and commercial point on the Buriganga. During the nineteenth century, administrative offices and commercial activity expanded around the area, while the nearby Buckland Bund created a more formal riverfront. Ahsan Manzil, Northbrook Hall, Ruplal House, wholesale markets, and layers of dense Old Dhaka development still reveal the historic importance of the river.

The modern passenger terminal remains active, but its scale has changed. Road development and especially the Padma Bridge have reduced demand for many southern launch routes. BIWTA figures reported in August 2025 showed that normal daily departures from Sadarghat had fallen from around 140 launches to approximately 40 to 45, while several routes had closed.

That change does not make Sadarghat quiet. Passenger launches, cargo vessels, small boats, porters, traders, and workers still produce a dense riverfront atmosphere. Recent reporting in 2026 continued to document the lives of Sadarghat's boatmen and a working terminal, although Eid travel also showed a much smaller rush than in earlier decades.

A short river ride can offer an excellent perspective on Old Dhaka, but safety must take priority over spectacle. Visitors should not seek the thrill of maneuvering in a tiny boat between moving passenger launches. In March 2026, a launch struck passengers waiting in a dinghy at Sadarghat, causing a fatality and other casualties. Recent collisions on the Buriganga provide another reminder that active shipping lanes carry real risk.

The Buriganga also faces severe environmental pressure from sewage, industrial pollution, and urban waste. A responsible river experience should acknowledge both the river's historic importance and its present ecological condition.

Plan Your Trip

  • When to experience: Late afternoon offers good light over the Buriganga and active riverfront scenes. Avoid poor weather, storms, and low-visibility conditions.
  • How to Experience: Explore the terminal area from safe public spaces. If you take a river ride, arrange it through a responsible operator or experienced boatman, use available life jackets, and remain well away from active launch movements.
  • Cultural Tip: Never ask a boatman to approach a moving launch for a photograph. Keep cameras and phones secure around crowded ghats and on small boats.

They Say!

Historic Gateway: Sadarghat has served as a major river landing and commercial district for generations.
Changing Passenger Traffic: Normal daily launch departures have fallen sharply since road connectivity improved.
Safety Matters: Small-boat rides should stay clear of active launch berths and heavy vessel traffic.
