Dublar Char

Sail to a seasonal world of fishing camps, faith and mangrove sea

Dublar Char

Cross deep into the Sundarbans for a coast that changes with fishing season and sacred gathering.

4. Main Content:

Travel by authorised vessel toward the southern edge of the Sundarbans, where Dublar Char becomes a seasonal centre of fishing work and religious pilgrimage. In the dry months, temporary camps process and dry marine catch; during the Rash gathering, worshippers arrive for the holy bath under special official arrangements. This is not an independent island excursion. Forest Department permits, registered operators, authorised vessels and security instructions control every visit, and regular tourism may be restricted around the festival. The entire forest closes from 1 June to 31 August. Respect workers and pilgrims, and never treat temporary camps as standard tourist accommodation.

Dublar Char changes character with the season. During the dry-period fishing cycle, temporary camps support workers who land, process and dry marine catch. Around the Rash pilgrimage, worshippers gather under special government arrangements for religious observance and the holy bath. Visitors must understand that both settings are organised around work and faith, not around unrestricted entertainment.

Book only through a Forest Department-approved operator using an authorised vessel. Confirm permits, passenger registration, the approved route, life jackets, trained crew, sanitation, drinking water and security requirements. Festival-year controls may limit tourist movements or separate pilgrims from ordinary visitors, and official instructions can change at short notice. The complete Sundarbans tourism closure from 1 June through 31 August applies here as well.

On site, remain with the guide and respect temporary work zones. Do not photograph people closely without permission, interfere with drying racks or treat fishing camps as hotels. During the pilgrimage, dress and behave respectfully, avoid obstructing rituals and follow crowd-management directions. Wildlife should be watched from a distance; loud music, feeding and waste disposal in the forest are unacceptable. Overnight stays belong aboard the authorised vessel unless an official event notice provides a specific legal arrangement. Carry binoculars, light luggage and reusable water containers, and keep all plastic on board for removal. Dublar Char offers a powerful meeting of mangrove, sea, livelihood and belief. Its adventure is meaningful only when travellers follow the season’s rules and recognise that they are guests in a sensitive forest and a temporary working community.

Plan Your Trip

  • When to Visit: Plan for November to February. If travelling for the Rash festival, follow the special government notice for that year; avoid the complete 1 June–31 August closure.
  • How to Visit: Book through a Forest Department-listed operator and confirm the approved itinerary, permit, vessel, guard, event controls and safety equipment before departure.
  • Where to Stay: Best nearby: Dublar Char has no hotel; the correct overnight base is an authorised liveaboard vessel, with Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation’s Hotel Pashur in Mongla for the closest practical staging night. Star-rated comfort: Jatra Flagship Khulna City Centre is listed at 4-star and Tiger Garden Int Hotel at 3-star, both secondary city options. Landscape/community stay: Iraboti Eco Resort at Dhangmari offers cottages, local food and village-and-canal experiences outside the protected forest. Never sleep in fishing or festival camps without legal authorisation.
