Pineapples of Madhupur

Ride into red-earth country where spiky green fields hide a harvest of gold.

Pineapples of Madhupur

Follow bicycles and market trucks into Bangladesh's GI pineapple landscape.

Madhupur's pineapple country stretches across the red-soil uplands of Tangail, where low rows of sharp leaves create a landscape unlike Bangladesh's floodplains. During harvest, farmers carry fruit by bicycle, van and truck toward busy local markets, and the air turns sweet around piles of newly cut pineapple. Madhupur pineapple received Geographical Indication recognition in 2024, formally linking the product with its place of origin and agricultural heritage.

The journey is strongest when it connects field, market and community. Giant Kew is widely associated with the area, while local naming and availability may vary. A grower can explain how fruit maturity is judged and how rain, drainage and market demand affect harvesting. Pineapple does not continue becoming sweeter after it is picked, so travellers should choose mature fruit from a trusted seller rather than focus only on size or colour.

Garo and Bengali farmers are part of the region's pineapple story. Community identity must be represented with permission, not used as decoration. Arrange visits through a known guide or host, ask before photographing people or homes and pay openly for guiding, tasting and meals. Fields are private and the leaves are sharp; stay on the route provided, wear closed footwear and do not cut fruit yourself unless the farmer specifically supervises it.

The main summer and monsoon harvest can bring heat, rain and muddy roads. Start early, carry water and keep the itinerary flexible. Madhupur town or a nearby local stay is more relevant than a distant luxury hotel, though standards are modest. Combine the fruit journey with the sal-forest landscape only through legal entrances and without treating farmland or forest as free access. The adventure lies in contrast: red earth, green blades, golden flesh and a living farming tradition moving at bicycle speed.

Choose fruit with the grower's guidance and carry it without crushing. A careful purchase supports the farm and lets the flavour continue long after the red-earth road disappears behind you.

Plan Your Trip

  • When to Visit: June to August usually provides the strongest harvest atmosphere, though pineapple can reach markets outside that window. Confirm current field and market activity locally; monsoon rain can make rural roads muddy or slow.
  • How to Visit: Travel by road from Dhaka or Tangail to Madhupur, then use a local guide or pre-arranged grower contact for field access. Wear closed shoes, start early and never enter or cut fruit in a field without permission.
  • Where to Stay: Verified 3–5-star accommodation in Madhupur is N/A. Choose a recently reviewed local hotel, forest-edge guesthouse or recognised eco-stay after directly checking hygiene and transport. Salna Parjatan Resort, Bhawal Resort or Sarah Resort near Gazipur are higher-standard but distant fallbacks, not primary Madhupur stays.
